That from flesh unto spirit men grow

Even here upon sod under sun.’122

Chesterton’s letters to Frances could be quoted here at much greater length, not only from Maisie Ward’s two biographical volumes but also, perhaps more illuminatingly, directly from the Chesterton papers: Ward is necessarily selective and tends to concentrate more on the lyrical and sentimental than the intellectual aspects of this correspondence between engaged lovers. What we need to register here, perhaps, is not only that it is clear from these letters that this was as much a relationship of the mind as of the emotions and the affections, but also that (both before and after their marriage) Frances’s religious influence on Chesterton is otherwise inexplicable, given the rigorously intellectual character of his religious preoccupations. Above all, perhaps, as Maisie Ward puts it, the letters reveal that during their long engagement, ‘[t]he two got to know each other with a close intimacy: they were comrades as well as lovers and carried both these relationships into married life’.123
